You Can Hear His Voice

Introduction

Our hope is that this guide will open your eyes to the most wonderful truth of the Bible – that Jesus is alive and His Spirit is within you, and He wants to be in an intimate relationship with you.  Jesus wants to comfort you when life feels unbearable, to encourage you when you are discouraged, to guide you when you feel lost and directionless, and to remind you of His love when you feel forgotten. He wants to inspire your faith, restore your hope, and whisper words of love to your heart.  He wants to be your all in all!

Hearing from Jesus is not difficult, complex or only for those who have a special gift.  You can learn how to personally hear His voice! Jesus promised that His sheep hear His voice and they know Him and they follow Him.  (John 10:27)

We have kept this little guide short, explaining the 5 steps to receive messages from Jesus, so you can dive in to the Living Waters today.

Jesus reaching out to you

Step 1: Receive Jesus

Jesus told Nicodemus that “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3)  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” (John 3:18-17)

The first step to learning to Hear from Heaven is to open your heart to Jesus and receive Him. We are all sinners. No one in this world is perfect or without sin – but when Jesus took our punishment on the cross, He atoned for our sins and gave us the gift of eternal life.

You can receive Jesus right now by praying this simple prayer: Dear Jesus, please forgive me for all my sins. I believe that You died for me. I invite You into my heart and life. Please fill me with Your love and Holy Spirit, help me get to know You, and guide me in the way of truth. Help me to love You and love others and live by the words in Your book, the Bible. Amen.”

Step 2: Believe that He wants to speak to you

Believing that God wants to speak to us directly and individually is essential to hearing His voice.  Many mistakenly think it’s wrong to seek God’s voice, assuming He communicates today only through the Bible or sermons from pastors. Some even view seeking direct communication with God as unbiblical, believing the Bible is the sole means of divine connection.

As God’s children, we are loved deeply, and He longs to speak directly to us. That’s one of the reasons Jesus died for us, so we could have a direct relationship with God Himself without the need for a go-between.  Jesus is the only go-between we need with the Father, and He is also God Himself.  Through the Holy Spirit, God conveys His love, guidance, and encouragement directly to our hearts and minds. While ministers and Bible teachers are valuable, they should not replace the personal, direct communion between God and His child. This intimate fellowship strengthens faith and deepens our love for Him.

In Matthew 10:27, Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice.” This is as true today as it was when Jesus spoke it. Jesus promised that He would send His Spirit to “guide us into all Truth”, and that He would not leave us comfortless.  So to hear God’s voice, you must first believe He wants to speak to you and accept that hearing His voice is an important part of your relationship with Him. Pray for your spiritual ears to be opened, trusting and believing that He wants to speak to you.

Step 3: Tune In

The Lord’s voice is like radio waves—always present, already filling the room. We don’t make the signal appear; we just learn how to tune in. God’s power is always on, and His Spirit surrounds us. When we tune our hearts to Him, and take time to get quiet and listen, we will hear His voice.

Getting quiet in today’s age of constant distractions is not easy. It takes discipline to set aside your phone, clear your mind from the cares and concerns of the day, and get quiet.

“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, Jesus went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.” (Luke 4:35)

You can tune into Jesus’ Voice by reading the Bible and quietly meditating on His promises. Let the written Word speak to your heart and draw you close to Jesus. You can enter into His presence by praising Him, singing hymns or listening to inspiring music.  (Psalm 100:4)  So Step Two is to find a place to get quiet, enter into Jesus’ presence, and tune in to His Spirit.

Step 4: Ask

The next step is to Ask!  Ask Jesus to speak to you, and then get quiet and listen.  You can ask a simple question like:  “What do You want to say to me now?”  Or you can also ask a specific question:  “Help me to understand what You want me to do in this situation.”

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.  Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” (Matthew 7:7-11)

Step 5: Write it Down

Write down what you receive.  In the beginning as you are learning to Hear His Voice, you might just get a few words, or a Bible verse might come to mind.  Write down what you hear – and as you continue to open your channel to Jesus, His words to you will flow more freely.

Writing down the messages you receive will strengthen your gift and also show that you value and treasure the Lord’s words. You will also be able to go back later and read what the Lord said, and His Words can be a continual source of strength, guidance and encouragement to you.

Thank Him!

Finally, thank Jesus for speaking to you.  Thank Him for His love and care for you, and thank Him for being your faithful shepherd, leading you, providing for you and keeping you close to His heart.

“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  Psalm 119:105

Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:1,4-5)

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and he delighteth in his way.” (Psalm 37:23)
